Exhibition 2010 - Sydney metropolitan Art (SMART) Gallery
In that collection, Zabilou this time thoroughly addresses the two main roles of women in West and Central Africa: working at home or in the fields and childbirth. Are all African women satisfied with this situation? Some are, some less so... These two roles are expressed here with all the questions they raise: hard work, hazardous pregnancies and children in peril...
"After spending all those years in Central and West Africa, I collected a few African pieces that have followed me in my daily life here in Australia. The curves of the Baga snake displayed in my home naturally direct me to motherhood. The profile of the washboard that is still commonly used in Africa inspires me to express labour and relentless work."
